Online Continuing Education For NurseQ. I am wondering if anyone knows how many of the 50 states allows self study coursework? I am working on a project and this would help tremendously. Any suggestions/ advice for me ??? A. You asked about self-study Contact Hours. This is referred to as an Education Design II, and these are "allowable" in a ll 50 states, but I would guess that a related question is how many credits accumulated in this way are applicable toward mandatory CE requirements ( not all states have this) or with maintaining certification ( each individual certification program will have its own standards). Contact Hours approved by the ANA-affiliate State Nurses Association in any given state are expected to adhere to the standards put forth by the American Nurse's Credentialling Center, and I believe they have a website at www.ancc.org..... ask them.... HOwever, Indiana has no CEU requirements for relicensure. Ohio requires 24 contact hours every 2 years. All can be obtained via home study courses. And while we're on the subject...what do you think about the fact that nurses can renew licenses indefinitely without evidence of continuing education? Not that reading one of the speedy, 24contact hours lessons means a nurse has learned anything, but don't you think there should be requirements? Do you think the competency validations done by employers are enough? And what about those of us who practice independently? Should we need to show proof of continuing education and competency? Does this smack of tenure for teachers, which is another whole can of worms?
