Q. I am looking to get a law degree and would like to do it online. Where do I turn, and how do I make sure I can practice in my home state of PA?
A. I would be very wary of an online law degree. the one that I heard about (I don't remember the name) isn't accredited by the ABA. ABA accreditation is crucial in most cases. I know a few states, like California, will allow you to sit for the bar exam without attending an ABA accredited school as long as the California bar association has accredited the school. Graduating from an ABA accredited school allows you to sit for the bar exam in any state. The only state which recognizes an online law degree is California. The names of the online law schools are Concord and Taft University. To determine the educational requirements for taking the Pennsylvania bar exam, you should contact the State Bar of Pennsylvania. If you are looking to get employed after law school then stop looking for online degrees and go to a real law school. Most states do not recognize law degrees from correspondence schools or online. Many states will not allow one to sit for the bar exam unless they have attended a 3 year program at an ABA approved school. If you do not sit for the bar exam then you do not practice law.
