Medical Billing Courses or Certificate
Q. I want start career in area of the medical billing. What are good certifications that helps to get entry level medical biller job? Please also let me know if you know if some colleges/universities in boston area offer certificate class room courses in medical billing. I would also like to know about the online courses offered by some accredited college or university.
A. There are certificate programs that are accrediated by the American Academy of Professional Coders. If you are wanting to break into the medical billing field with no expiernce in the healthcare industry, I would recommend that you start with a few classes. A coder is highly paid if certified by the AAPC (usually greater than 20/hour depending of the office/hosipatl setting. Coders attach the appropiate diagnosis code (ICD-9) to the diagnosis that a physician has provided and they attach the appropiate procedure code (CPT or HCPCS)to the procedure desription that the physician performed. If you have time and have never been in the healthcare industry, it is best that you gain some lower level expeirence in a offcie setting, like a front office staff member. This will allow you to become with the insurance companies that you will be dealing with in the billing dept. This will also get you fimilar with what a HMO/PPO/POS/EPO/Indeminty and all the other types of plans are. Back to the classes, I would go to www.aapc.com and see if it offers any direction for colleges in the Boston area.
