Are Training Courses Driving Leaders Away?
Q. Are Training Courses Driving Leaders Away? Is the current training setup outdated, too business like, administered by school teachers and far removed from what youger leaders want and need. Are PLs training courses trying to teach 12 yo kids man management skills, let them have fun.?
A. - I get the impression that training varies greatly around the country. I think more activity training is required - a training which ensures that our leaders are qualified to operate section nights well, and possibly even to include a subject of choice which they might qualify to national governing body level. We should also ensure that leaders are capable of running activities at HQ and away within the required legal and safe guidelines. I also believe that more adults should be encouraged to take activity training courses leading to national governing body qualifications and that these should be actively supported by the county assesors. And adults should carry identification of the skills they have, or make their qualifications known to the parents and the members by whatever means possible. Why can't they have fun and learn at the same time? I would agree that there is too much emphasis on the teamwork and man management element and not enough on the task. Example: Pioneering - build a catapult, which fired a half brick somewhat shorter distance than feeblest Scout could throw same - I'm happy they worked as team and built catapult - They are disappointed because they feel that they failed ( next time they will build it a different way and it will work better). On the other hand, they build a drawbridge and although it goes nowhere, it works - task completed - great joy and celebration in camp. Now tell me that succesfully completing the task doesn't matter to the kids. Sometimes the team functions in its entirety, sometimes it doesn't. I believe that the sign of a good team is its ability to pick up the tasks dropped by the less effective members. So whilst the SA are telling me that every member should be involved, I'm thinking, if we have to wait for Joe to get his act together the task is not going to be completed, so if the SPL can make the rest work and fill out the gaps then great, the system works. - No. The current set-up is almost infinitely variable. How your local training team choose to implement it is another question. In the last few years, in my county, we've had training "by the manual", portfolio, one-to-one, modular by evenings or weekends. Methods have ranged from talk & chalk, through to deriving the lessons while building a roundhouse. The beauty of concepts such as NAOMIE or Action Centred Leadership (TM?) is that they can be readily grasped, in essence, by 12yo wannabe PLs. Agree with the fun, thats usually the first N in NAOMIE
