Ged Pretests

Q. Anyone have any good information that will help a student who wants to get his GED, but is not really up to taking the courses to prepare at the local night high school for various personal reasons? He has a prep book and claims that he hasn't passed the pretests (assesses himself as on about the 5th grade level). He wants to attempt this, but needs a way to actually learn what he needs on his own - any online courses or resources that will help? What is the best GED book to recommend?

A. I'm just starting to tutor a student for the GED. Our program is run through a local group and involves one-hour weekly lessons with homework. I've looked at our primary coursebook, which covers reading, vocabulary, and some writing, and I think some of it could be done independently. We use the Challenger series by Corea Murphy. Perhaps this student could simply contact a tutoring center and ask to purchase copies of their prep materials, including the teachers' manuals?
