Ged Math Test

Q. Is there anyone out there willing to help a struggling (math) braindead correspondence student with her math, so she can pass the high school equivalency test? I failed the GED math test last year by 2 points, and I refuse to give up. Although I passed all the other subjects, now I have to take the entire test again so I decided to go correspondence, but I've forgotten everything I know about algebra. I'm 51 years old and I'm determined to get that diploma. It's also a suprise for my parents, who are sitll living, bless their hearts. I'm sure they will be proud of me.

A. I admire your tenacity and your interest, even at your very advanced age (same as mine), in pleasantly surprising your parents. When you run across problems you don't quite understand, post them here (paying attention to parentheses, and telling us the _whole_ problem--you'd be astonished at how many posts say, "I have to solve this: x^2 - 4." So what's to solve? Turns out the poster means factor.), and you'll find that lots of people are willing to give you comprehensive help--not just an answer, but the thinking that leads you there. One more note, however. If you just post: "Solve this" and a problem, you're not likely to get much help. Show what you've done, even if it's almost nothing. This shows where you're having problems and allows those who respond to tailor their responses to your needs. In many ways you're far better off posting here than finding one person who'll spend a lot of time emailing you back and forth--for one thing, you get diversity of opinion. For another, if someone gives you a wrong answer on a newsgroup, you can be sure that someone else will straighten it out.
