Q. I was wondering on average how many Ph.D recipients hold a GED as opposed to a high school diploma. Anyone have a figure or know where to look for this?
A. There are lots of kids who leave HS before getting a diploma and go into college. IF they graduate from college no one CARES whether they have a HS diploma. It would be a waste of time to take the GED exam. "Smart" kids who drop out of HS soon figure out that the GED doesn't mean much. The US military will not take GED kids. Colleges demand more difficult tests (ACT, SAT). Most colleges will accept a student without a high school diploma if test scores are good enough, usually on a probationary basis for a semester, then full enrollment. The only reason to take the GED would be for eligibility for federal/state financial aid, which is normally pegged on having a high school diploma or for some of the state "lottery scholarships".
