Leadership Training games for boys ?
Q. Do some councils have training for Patrol Leaders, Senior Patrol Leaders etc? Ours has the JLTC during summer but there doesn't seem to be any evening/weekend sessions for scouts that can't participate in a JLTC. Or any free Leadership Training games for boys ?
A. -Circle 10 Council (the area around Dallas) has a junior leader training program that closely parallels the adult leader training. The first level is run by each district and is called "Oak Leaf." This consists of a weekend camp (though some other districts with whom we have shared camps seem to do just an all-day Saturday program). The boys check in early Saturday morning, are formed into ad hoc patrols, and spend the day and Sunday morning with a mixture of presentations, games, and scout skill exercises and competitions. Four of the leadership skills are taught. (and I'm embarrased to admit that I'm not sure which four.) The prerequisite is First Class rank. The next level is the week-long summer JLT camp run by the council, called "Golden Acorn" by Circle 10. It is closely modeled on Woodbadge, and all 11 leadership skills are covered. All participants must have completed Oak Leaf. Scouts who have completed Golden Acorn are eligible to staff these programs, first Oak Leaf, then Golden Acorn. Our troop has a strong tradition of participation in and staffing these programs, and this has been a big factor in keeping our older scouts engaged. -There used to be Junior Leader Orientation Workshop (JLOW), but that was replaced by Scoutmaster's Junior Leader Training KIt with a video in the red binder. That is still the training, but it is sold without the binder and the video is sold separately now. Some Districts are getting the Scoutmasters together to do their training in larger groups when they have too small of a troop to do a decent job on their own. That is the recommended procedure in the manual. But national is not taking the responsibility for training the Junior Leaders from the Scoutmasters. Strictly speaking, the only job of the Scoutmaster is training the junior leaders.
