Is there a standard scheme for controls in driving games?

Q. Is there a standard scheme for controls in driving games? Can games be used on other driver consoles? I know Pole Position's steering wheel was free spinning, indicating that it uses some encoder rather than a series of switches, but I guess others with fixed "lock" steering could just use switches at intervals to detect when the wheel has been turned by a certain amount. I'd really like to get hold of some of my old driving favourites but I don't have the room for a bunch of cabinets.

A. There are two basic types of steering controls, the opto encoder and the pot. If the wheel is free spinning, it is an opto encoder type wheel. the opto encoder wheel is used in all atari driving games, older sega games (Monaco GP and Turbo), most older midway driving games (grudge match, demo derby) and the leland driving games(off road, indy heat). If the wheel only turns to the left and right and centers itself in the middle, it uses a pot for control. most of the new driving games use a pot for control like (final lap, all the newer sega games). There are exceptions, Roadblasters uses a opto encoder, but since it does not have a steering wheel, it unly turns a little and centers itself. Star wars uses basically the same type controls, but uses a pot. If you want to play the games, you will need the controls, but you probably can use a tempest controller in place of a opto controlled wheel. and you probably could use an analog type joystick for the pot typr contolled games. just make sure the joystick has the same value pot as in the game (most all games use 5k pots).
