Q. What have you done about driver's ed in Florida?
A. We did the home school Driver's Education thing first about six months with each child (only one dead garbage can, and no damage to the car). But when it comes to insurance they will only accept school or Safety Council Drivers Ed. We went the school route first, but they (here in east central Florida) have become anti home school in the last few years and only allow home school students in as a last resort after all students in public school desiring a place have been given a spot in the class. In Florida they also require a Substance Abuse (I think that is what they call it) class before they can get a drivers license. By the way this was a really fun experience for us. We still laugh about it all of the time. I had special places to take them where they were not familiar so that they would learn how to deal with unknown situations (my favorite was a hill, yes in Florida, that when you reach the top it appears to drop off into nothing, and the old winding river road, with barely enough room for two MG Midgets to pass, in a full sized van). The oldest became a back seat driver (a female thing I'm sure) and we had to get over that. Mom enjoyed the breaks and the stories when we got home. We have been blessed with no major problems yet after three years. One more thing, it was amazing to me how teenagers could so quickly forget right and left when they got behind the wheel!
