There is no functional difference in terms of being able to get into college with either a HS diploma or GED, and the GED is quicker. As far as schools, in general, two year programs are more vocational. If you're just looking to get a vocational-level job in the computer field, a two year computer programming degree will be fine. On the other hand, a four-year CS degree will have a lot more theory and background, giving you a more rounded education and (in theory at least) better qualifications to tackle larger, more sophisticated projects. But a quality 4 year program is also likely to be more difficult, requiring calculus, possibly some physics, structured logic and reasoning, and a lot of theoretical and historical background. You can find some free online resources to help you study for the GED -- see http://distancelearn.about.com/cs/ged/ for links. Also check into state resources -- Mindquest (http://www.mindquest.org/) is an online program for adults and young adults who want to complete a regular high school diploma, issued by a public high school. It's free to Minnesota residents.
