Can anyone recommend a Drivers Education School for me?
Q. I want to take my girlfriend apple-picking.can anyone recommend (or warn about) a driving school I might want to get in touch with? I'm in Midwood. While I'm on the subject, can anyone recommend or warn about any of the test sites in Brooklyn?
A. I cannot help you with driving schools in Brooklyn, since I learned from one in Manhattan. What I can tell you, based on my experience, is that many driving schools are not very good. Shop around and see if you can find one with careful and patient instructors. My instructors (Model Driving School, 14th St/ 7th Ave, NYC) were mediocre at best. Because of this, my best learning experiences were with friends and family in empty parking lots. Many people will tell you that this is the best way to learn. What I can tell you though, is that there is a "trick" to the road test that is offered in Sheepshead Bay (based on how it was a few years ago). When the start you off, there is a stop sign, with a line in the street that is well in front of it. Many a testee has stopped beyond the line (which I understand is an automatic failure). Based on my own experience, combined with other people my age, the easiest road test in NYC is the one offered on Staten Island (the one in Port Richmond). When I took my road test, this location offered appointments over the phone, the lowest wait time, and the easiest "exam" - two turns, a "k" turn, a parallel park, and two more turns. My friends who took their road tests there had similar experiences. My experiences are not that "dated". I took my road test in 1996. Many of my friends took theirs between 1995-1999.
