Is it true that all 15 year olds are required complete a driver's education course before they can get a learner's permit in North California? Is this true?
Q. We just recently moved to North Carolina, and I heard that state law requires that all 15 year olds complete a driver's education course before they can get a learner's permit. Is this true? If so, how can a homeschooler take this training? Frankly, the whole thing sounds like a ploy by the Public School System to force homeschoolers to fall under their control.
A. I'd still check the laws in North California carefully before pursuing that route. Here in Illinois, the drivers course that is followed has to be certified by the state to teach kids under 18. We can use either the public schools or any private drivers ed agency that has gotten certification, but that does effectively keep out homeschool moms and dads from qualifying. In our case, this does not allow the public schools to "get control" of us, since we can follow private means just as easily (although it's more expensive). In fact, the public schools probably don't appreciate the law any more than we do, since they MUST teach our kids even if we don't go to the public schools for anything else.
