Was anyone fortunate enough to drive a Studebaker in Drivers' Ed?Q. One car we likely never forget is the car we drove while in the driving phase of Driver Education, for those who took "Drivers' Ed." Was anyone fortunate enough to drive a Studebaker in Drivers' Ed? If not, what was your school's sled of choice for your "training?" A. They had no Driver's Ed at my school. It was possible (then) to get a restricted license at 14 (no night driving). My dad had me steering the '35 Plymouth sitting in his lap when I was maybe 8. He then taught me to drive in a '39 Dodge pickup with a 3-speed floor shift. I took (and passed) my driving test in a '39 Plymouth (also 3-speed floor shift). We were required to use hand signals because many cars didn't have turn signals. I'm aged, but not as old as these years imply. We were poor and drove old vehicles. We're talking mid-50s. The no-night-driving wasn't a problem. The '39 Plymouth was a pre-sealed beam model. I could see about as well by holding a flashlight out the window.
