Math degree via distance education ?
Q. I am looking for an accredited math degree program that is available via distance education. If that is not possible then I am looking for a way of validating degree level math knowledge through study followed by subsequent examination. I currently hold a traditional computer science degree but would like to improve my math skills to the degree level without returning to school.
A. forget the on-line math degree mumble jumble. if you want a degree in math, better do it the old fashioned way. the on-line degree fad does not cut it when it comes to the study of math and some other sciences. He mentioned nothing about an on-line degree. Distance education does take on other forms. While I'm not familiar of any mathematics degree programs available exclusively via distance education, there are still plenty of "old fashioned" accredited universities that offer correspondence courses in upper-level math and the sciences. My recommendation: If you cannot find a distance education or exam program, apply to your local university and join their degree program. Talk to a counselor or advisor and find out 1.) how many credits must be taken actually at the university in order to complete the program (usually no less than 30), and 2.) how much correspondence credit will transfer (varies, but any correspondence taken from another accredited university which is part of their degree program will usually transfer). Then you can compose a curriculum which consists of one night class and two correspondence courses per semester (or perhaps more depending on your schedule). Nothing beats sitting in a classroom, but for many of us, that's not always an option. Such degree programmes do exist, although I can't tell you what's available in Canada. A fairly obvious example is the Open University in Britain. Another here in New Zealand is Massey University.
