Dental Continuing Education Online

Q. I´m from Scandinavia and most of my dental books are either in Finnish, Swedish or Norwegian. Now I would like to invest in few good books in English. My friends have suggested Carranza´s Clinical Periodontology and Proffit´s Contemporary Orthodontics. Amazon.com carries nearly 1400 topics so I´m a bit lost. I graduated from a local dental school with only two books purchased - and so did all my classmates. Actually there are only those two dental books written in my own language! My only chance to buy dental books would be online. Could you help by suggesting the best dental books for a general practioner?

A. To just suggest some books off the top of our heads on the entire subject of dentistry is just asking too much from us. Specify a topic you wish to research more, or feel the need to occasionally look up topics in and we can be of more help. When I finished school, I had a pretty good set of textbooks, but referred back to few of them. The most current information available will be from journals, articles, online journals and other sources that are more current than textbooks. My advice would be not to spend too much time and effort on gathering textbooks. Seek other, more current sources of information. Although books are helpful in organizing basic knowledge in each subject, you have probably incorporated most of the basic knowledge in your pre-doctoral education. The dental journals would be a good source of current information and advances in the dental disciplines. I would also suggest attending continuing education courses and seminars at the major dental meetings. Many of the lectures at the dental meetings contain a wealth of up-to-date information. If you still desire a set of books to keep as a reference, go to the bookstore at a dental school and ask to see the texts currently used by the dental students. These texts should cover all the basic subjects and give the basic background dental knowledge.
