Dental Continuing Education CourseQ. Out of curiosity, which textbooks from dental school still line the bookshelves in your offices today? As a first year dental student I hope the books I am using today will be of some use once I leave school. A. A few years back I was on a mini crusade to try to explain to the majority of dentists that the nonvital bleaching technique that they learned prior to 1986-90 was actually a dangerous method. They all were stunned and simply didnt belive it. One DDS I talked to had earlier that week done 4 teeth using the old unprotected method. Even got out his old textbook and showed me it was OK... Not only do most of these guys/gals not ever buy a updated version of a textbook, but they don't even read the general journals. They fill their appointment book and then go play golf with any spare time. Continuing Education is mostly limited to money producing cosmetic procedures. I am simply amazed that so many GPs never learn anything after dental school on topics such as RCT and yet continue to do it weekly. Perhaps one GP in 100 has a subscription to Endodotics and perhaps one in 20 has purchased a updated version of Pathways to the Pulp. They are flying blind and costing patients much grief from their ignorance. I think patients are lucky if their DDS has one journal that they actually read monthly....meaning they at least look at the titles of the articles.... and read even one in total.
