Correspondence Course Home?Q. I've been having a look at training programmes for hypnotherapists in the UK. Some courses are purely correspondence courses, where the trainee has to complete test papers periodically and return a final examination or thesis at the end of the course, with no time limit. Others involve lectures, practical work, oral and practical examinations, or written examinations under exam conditions. I have corresponded with and talked to various people about the variation in training requirements and one thing comes through loud and clear: contempt for correspondence courses, except from the people who run them! Of course I wouldn't want to let someone operate on me if he'd only learnt the operation from a video, but I don't think hypnosis is like that. There are practical skills involved, but I think these are less important than a deep understanding of all the implications of hypnotherapy. I can't see how a course requiring attendance at lectures is better than a correspondence course for learning how to deal with the difficulties I've just described. Any comments? A. I suppose one could also take a correspondence course in music, acting or any other number of vocations...yet it would seem to me if all was being imparted by (merely) the written word much simply could not be conveyed. And to a great extent the learning would be "academic" in nature. So much of what I found invaluable while learning initially was witnessing the interaction between hypnotherapist (teacher) and subject...something that can to a great extent be caputured on film...yet I would still in hindsight prefer to experience in person. One could also learn to become an auto mechanic from a correspondence course..and although they may well be competent enough to get an engine to run, they may not have that additional artistry to enable the engine to "purr". One can also not question (in the moment) a correspondence course and dialogue solutions to challenges one might find proposed by the materials...yet alone an actual situation. One will most probably also not find themselves availed of the (usually harmless, yet often humorous) stories of the instructor's early personal experiences into the field. Personally, I would not have "gotten" nearly as much out of all I have read regarding hypnosis/hypnotherapy over years without my early "in person" learning. And lastly, one cannot experience hypnosis with oneself working with others from a correspondence course (which I would see as the greatest drawback). Although I sell a correspondence course, I do not push it because of my belief that one ALSO needs "hands-on" training when possible. In fact, whenever someone e-mails me regarding info on my home study course, I let him/her know that only 2 of the 3 segments are available in home study format -- BECAUSE of the need for live training. However, let us remember that some people live in remote areas; and for them, home study for at least part of their training might mean the difference.
